ANA Hotel and Rodanntei

My girlfriend booked a room at the ANA Hotel, which she claims is her favorite in town. When we arrived, we parked ourselves (I didn't see a valet option) and went to the room. She had checked in earlier and prepared a spread of my favorite foods and beverages; nice touch. The room wasn't all that special, but it was clean and well designed; plus, the TV was pretty nice.

We went out shortly thereafter. After walking around town for about an hour, we went to her favorite restaurant, which she's been dying to show me for a long time now (a secondary motivation was to help dispel the myth that Japanese food is limited to sushi and tepanyaki). The restaurant is called rodanntei. She describes the cuisine there as "country style." It had very poor signage and I imagine would be quite hard to find, if you didn't have good directions. We entered through the main door, which couldn't have been much taller than 5'8" or so. In the center of the room, there was a deck that might have been 20'x20', with about 15 chairs around the 3 open sides. The host stood at the far side of the deck and tended to hot coals, the purpose of which I can't recall.

I can't think of any words to describe the food, aside from saying that it was pretty damn good. The sake was also quite nice (the cold sake was served in bamboo caraffes and cups, which was a nice touch). We must have eaten for around 2 hours before the food stopped coming and moved onto some of her favorite bars.
