The easiest and cheapest routing is through LAX. Please ring the US embassy (or consulate if in Auckland) to find out whether the record affects the mate being able to enter the US (even transits are treated as entering the country).

If cant go through LAX then will have a long & expensive detour via Chile or Argentina (or even longer through asia + canada, or asia+europe).
