I was told this as well. Gold card can also be achieved (the more difficult way?) through slots/VP by amassing 2000 points in 12 month period (starts in November). Slots are rated at $20 per point and $50 for VP.

I agree, I usually stick to breakfast with Grand Lux and while the food is decent the service is almost always awful.
