As noted, you have to define "cheap" and "good accomodations" to get a real sense of what you're after.
I go to Las Vegas fairly frequently (2-3 times a year), and I usually follow these strategies:
1. Sign up for the e-mail newsletters at each of the casino hotel websites. Better yet, sign up for the slot card clubs. You'll often get offers in the mail or via e-mail.
2. If you have an idea of the level of hotel you want to stay at, check several properties and look for a good rate. Do this as early as possible. If you find a rate you can live with, book directly with the hotel. If you find more than one hotel with a good rate, book at all of them. As your travel date gets closer, keep checking the hotel websites to see if the rates have dropped. If they have, call them up and rebook at the cheaper rate. Keep this up until a few days before your travel date. Remember, you can always cancel without penalty at practically all Las Vegas hotels without penalty up to 48 hours before arrival. However, this strategy involves deposits on your credit card for each hotel you book.
For example, I'll employ this strategy for my annual trip for March Madness. I usually book a room around November at a couple of properties. I keep checking the rates every week or so to see if any have dropped. As soon as, I get within a week, I'll pick the booking I like and cancel the rest.
3. In addition to the various hotel websites, check the other booking sites. A great way to do this is with a tool called,
Travelaxe. It's a software tool you download that checks multiple travel sites at the same time for trips to Las Vegas.
4. Cruise
Las Vegas Talk. This is a forum of Las Vegas fanatics, and you can sometimes pick up word of great deals.
5. Use hotel programs, like Hilton or Starwood, to get rooms via points. The Hilton Las Vegas is served directly by the new monorail and provides easy access to the strip. Starwood has the Aladdin and Westin Casurina on or near the strip, respectively. For example, I'm staying at the Aladdin for 3 nights over New Years for 30,000 Starwood points. Rooms are going for $499 a night over that weekend, so I'm getting pretty good value for my points.
