Each individual is different.I would not hesitate to use a SSWU to Rome.My circumstances are different(as to all the small aircraft I tend to frequent).

Actually, domestic these days can be a better use of SSWUs given all the cutbacks in service in the back cabin. Because overseas Hospitality Class has not been trimmed in the same way, I have opted to use SSWUs that I manage to get on domestic transcons. [And if like you, connecting onward on an all-Y flight, even YHZ-YYZ would be worthwhile.] It used to be a marginally better use when there was the C-class bonus on NAmerican routes, but it certainly questionable when S/Club comes into play versus real ExecFirst.

Furthermore, the difference on an overseas flight between Q,L,V and H is quite affordable, so SWUs are the most practical certificate to use on many routes. The difference between TANGO and LATITUDE is often greater than YYZ-LHR from Q to H, for twice the flying time and more accoutriments, thus a better investment. Again tipping SSWUs in favour of NAmerican flights.
