So, just hide the bag in question when you approach the check-in desk, or if you do OLCI or use SSCI, only one of you needs to go to the FastBagDrop. The other one can stand somewhere with the carry-on luggage. As stated above, there will be no-one checking carry-on until the gate, and little risk of having it taken at that point (only if it looks huge).
