I've had no problems paying deposit at check-in in cash, at various hotels in Asia. I'd imagine either Pounds or Yen should be fine, they should hold it until check out and then any currency exchange would take place at that point (or if no further expenses, then hand the cash back). But as advised above, best to check with the hotel to see exactly how much they'll expect.
