If you would like to be more comfortable for the JNB-DXB sector, there is an A340-300 operated flight as well (the afternoon one) - the seats will be much wider, and the plane newer, although with slightly less seat pitch.
I am sorry to correct you:
The evening flight from JNB to DXB is on the 77W = ER, from December on the afternoon flight too.
Why is the A340-300 a "newer plane"?
I am on this route three times a year amd they use the "old" Singapore Airlines 340-300. Nothing bad, but not new for sure.

Try to change the seats 24 ABC on the first route, if you are a tall person. All three seats in front of you will have an equipment box under their seats because they are bulkhead/exit row seats (same for row 16 and 38).
