Card is swiped at security and at the gate where you get a small "receipt" with seat assignment. I really think this is the way to go rather than computer printouts!
ANA is doing something similar at their new Haneda (HND) terminal. A couple of months they even gave some money away for it's use (500 Yen, approx 3.5 Euro). I never tried it though, because it required using the ANA mileage card to which they would also post the mileage...
