Smoking was allowed on domestic flights well into the 1980's. There would simply be a card on the seatback of the last row in the non-smoking section to designate the beginning of the smoking section. In those days, most people just accepted smoking by others as a fact of life and didn't give it much thought. It was only after many years of complaining by people who were truly bothered by secondhand smoke that everyone seemed to jump on the bandwagon even if they had never been bothered by it before. The anti-smoking movement is spreading all over the world now that the dangers of secondhand smoke have become more widely known. I have not smoked for 13 years and I'm glad that was able to stop....it is very dangerous to one's health as we all know.

As for myself, I'd prefer to sit by the Marlboro smoker.
