this is very much the case. Years ago, I would get confirmed space on most international flights using SWU's at the time of ticketing. As well, since being back domestic since 2000, 1K as well and using HK's, CR1's whatever you want to call them I would get confirmed at the time of ticketing on everything but the most full domestic transcons.
That changed about 18 months ago, maybe two years. Where the norm was waitlists, and confirmation WITHIN the 100 hour window or at the gate.
NOW, my upgrade percentage hasn't gone down necessarilly, still about 9.5 out of 10, but the confirmation in ADVANCE is essentially ZERO.
