That's not correct. I've certainly done OLCI without my upgrade clearing prior. You simply stay where you are on the upgrade list and if you clear you'll get a new boarding pass at the gate. The way I understand it, the only way your OLCI time ever matters is as a tie breaker for someone who is the same eliteness as you and is on the same fare class as you. Then the earlier person to check in gets the upgrade. So if I were you I'd still do OLCI as soon as possible. No big deal if it spits out economy for now.
