I think it's something they are trying in IAD. Last Sunday, IAD-LAX, they made a clear announcement that boarding was going to be First Class/Zone 1, Zone 3, Zone 4, and then Zone 2. They repeated this a few times for emphasis. Outbound from LAX, it was First Class/Zone 1 and then WILMA.
