UA can and should have de-selected you since you're 1P. Always look for the asinine mark of haraSSSSment before you leave the counter. Ask to speak to the operations manager if the agent will not de-select you.
Agree on both counts. Unfortunately, in this case, the primary objective was to get to the gate as fast as possible to try and fix the seat issue. Plus I'm travelling with a groggy and irritable toddler, a wife with a back injury, and therefore I'm lugging multiple carryons. I decided that it was not the time to make a stand and potentially delay us.
In the past, when travelling by myself, I have stood my ground on things like this, such as shoe removal, even got one station to pull out a ruler and measure the sole thickness. And this was the first time EVER that I've been SSSS'd on United from the get-go on a long-existing, unchanged reservation, so I never even considered looking for it until we were over by security.
