Wow. I don't consider the OP's grievances to be minor at all. UA has some explaining to do.

I practically always jump up and volunteer when I see families trying to coordinate seating; it makes it easier for everyone. I've not heard of FAs not helping though. That's ridiculous. Sorry to hear about the bad experience.
