I had the gun (unloaded) in a non-TSA-locked gun case, inside my TSA-locked suitcase. The ammunition was in a separate box, but in the same suitcase. Delta refused to check it. According to the counter agent, the ammunition and gun had to be in entirely separate containers, and the ammunition had to be in the original, still-sealed box. I never checked with anyone else at Delta to see if the agent was correctly citing policy or making it up as she went along, but be aware that at least some of their employees take this position. The upshot is that in order to get that firearm and ammo onto the plane, I would have had to check at least two locked bags.

I wonder (and hope) if this was an isolated case. I have traveled with checked weapon recently and had to only seperate ammo from the weapon, both in same bag. weapon was in original locking box (combination locks) that it came in, ammo in mags. Also had 1/2 full box of ammo, with no problems. Maybe I got lucky and had better read the rules a little more closely.

Have a great day all!
