I find on my long haul flights between Sydney and Hong Kong I never get any special treatment. Only occasionally on the Taipei and Hong Kong routes. Then when they do greet me I get first pick of meals, wine from business class and all the staff know I am there and know my name.

Could be just specific crews bother with it and when they do acknowledge that you have MPO status, they treat you well even though you are only in Y.

Mind you, on the SYD-HKG flights, there are probably a lot of MPO members even in Y (not that I am in Y all that often on that route).
