Ever have prob w/firearm in checked luggage??

I'm about to travel soon and will be declaring a firearm in a checked baggage on NWA.

All requirements of NWA and TSA will be followed, but my concern is getting the bag inspected after I check it and the potential for theft.

I normally don't check, but when I do, I don't pack valuables. One leg is direct, but the other is a connector thru DTW with a plane change.

NWA's site: "Northwest does not accept liability for loss, damage, or delay of firearms, handguns, and ammunition. Excess valuation insurance may not be purchased for transport of firearms, handguns, and ammunition".

Thanks for your advice or recommendations and any good or bad experiences you may have had.
