I wonder the same thing.
A few years ago I was buying $1500 refundable tickets every week as that was company policy; for the flexibility. On the same route I could have bought the same flighst for $500-700 and pay $100 change fee if I needed to change an itinerary. I won't name the company but let's just say that the financial wizzardry displayed with regards to travel also ended up costing shareholders billions and sent a few execs to jail.
