Exec desk agented stated to me this morning that domestic system-wide they are changing the YUP inventory code to P and that A will remain as an upgrade/award inventory. A quick look at Expertflyer seems to show that effective 9/30/05 this is the case, i.e. all domestic two class flights are showing separate P and A (as well as F of course) buckets. Also on 9/30/05 the transcons start using "F" as their highest bucket instead of the former "P" for premium first class, and "P" on those flights is now presumably for YUP tickets (although I didn't read that fare rule to verify).
On most two class flights for now it looks like the A and P availability is similar although I am seeing some instances where P is much lower or zeroed out.
Certainly a smart move from a yield management standpoint.
[Edited to correct: P on the transcons now just looks like a restricted discounted first class fare, with F being the full fare. Those flights do now show something labeled "CUP" that gets you into I and D business class inventory at discounts. Basically they are splitting the premium cabins into various buckets so they can yield manage those for purchased tickets as has been done in coach for 25 years, and they are totally separating free/upgrade/award inventories so there is no cross-over.]
