The Mrs and I traveling to Europe for a vacation. Want to be able to upgrade her... I had three price choices for her ticket...
1) Low discount fare - no upgrade - $700
2) UA H fare - Upgrade 30k miles each way - $1100
3) UA B fare - Upgrade 15k miles each way - $1200
1 wasn't an option as I wanted to be able to UG. Between 2 and 3, only a $100 difference - so we went with 3 - she also will earn 1.5x miles on the flight with a B fare I think... so it is better all around...
And by the way, the B fare isn't completely refundable - its more flexable than the discount fare (V fare I think), but not a ton.
Always a balancing act for what you get with your money/miles
