You are right: this is rubbish. UA agents would not know, anyway, which fares accrue miles with DC.

Not any more: AA is withdrawing MRTC from its planes.
Although I am beginning to wonder if it is worth getting to Silver / Gold status anyway.
Depends who you usually fly with and at what fare. Clearly, if you fly mostly BD on very low fares, status will be of little use. SIlver will also be of limited use on other carriers, as *A S has few benefits. Still, if you regularly fly to the US, E+ on UA and DC S/G bonus 25% miles earned would make it useful,IMO. It also depends on what your alternatives are
