I'm not sure this is still the case. Bear in mind that United has a seating section at the front of economy called Economy Plus which gives a pretty generous 36" legroom and is less unpleasant than the rest. These are pre-assigned to Star Silver and Star Gold flyers but they fill up the spare seats with other 'ordinary' passengers when the flight gets full. It wouldn't hurt to ask at reservations, again at check-in and again at the gate to see if any of these E+ seats are free for you.
