I am travelling on an Aeroplan Reward ticket, I was wondering when I go and check-in online, will I be given the option to stand by for a later flight? or will they only allow me to standby for an earlier flight.

I would prefer to be given more time at DCA due to their extensive security checks.

Thanks in advance for any help that can be provided.
W tickets now only allow earlier same-day standby. If you want to get on a later flight you'll have to pay the change fee on AE tickets. It used to allow same-day standby anytime the day of your flight, but it has since changed.

A rudimentary FT search reveals a post from Andrew Yiu:
