Yes! I have been doing like you. Change $50-$100 worth only at airport where rates are not favorable to travellers. The next day, you can go to bank or money exchange booths.
Bank: usually you need passport and takes a long time. You will feel like you want to hit bank lady.

Exchange booths in Siam Square: submit your dollars through a window and in 3 seconds, Bahts are coming out. Rates are same or better than banks sometimes.
