Some FA's go by status - plat, gold, silver, etc., which is likely what you experienced. Other's just go down the rows.

I'm not sure which is official policy. I've heard people here say they're supposed to go by status, but seldom do, and I've also heard FA's up front crticitize other airlines for going by status.
