Just what and who is the Revenue Managment Department?

Contrary to the popular belief of revenue managements existing only for the sole purpose of frustrating FlyerTalkers with lack of EUAs, upgrades, awards, and masterminding evil conspiracies to scre-- I mean 'enhanced' us elites, I am curious to know more about them.

I picture them as being the economist, of sorts, of any airline. As I understand it, this department is responsible for setting/adjusting the prices of tickets, determining new routes, manage inventory (fare buckets), negotiating cargo/government/special contacts, setting fleet allocations (as in the CSM on XXX-YYY is both good and in high demand; we should add more inventory). I would also suppose the co* was developed as a managerial tool for revenue managements use (let's track the high spenders patterns and see if we can lure others over). Besides that, I would guess their secondary duties involve things such as upgrades, rewards, non-reving, etc.

Anyway, you get the picture.

But, I'm going to venture and say you experienced industry types will be able to describe our dear friends over on Smith Street with more insight than this P&S student.
