If you haven't purchased tickets yet, you can always fly Varig or Aerolinas Argentinas to EZE and get a stopover in Rio.
For $200 more, one could fly EZE-MIA-EZE and get nearly enough points for an EZE-GIG award and be 10% closer to EXP on AA or completely fast tracked to AA Gold.
