Website shows MVP Gold upgrade, but purchase won't give me an upgrade

I hope this has not been discussed before.

I just went online and saw a web special which leaves Wed and returns on Saturday. So I decided to first check to see if there are any MVPG upradable seats, so I do the same days Wed-Sat and choose MVP Upgradable fares and it shows a Q fare that has upgradable space.

So in my wisdom, I go back to the web fare and thinking that because it is within the 5 days, that I should be able to choose the cheaper web fare and get the upgrade. Nope..

It says I am on the wait list. Is there another bucket for upgrades? I presumed that they all came from the U bucket, and if the website was showing the flight as being MVPG upgradable then even a cheap web fare in this case should work.

Does anyone know why it didn't?
