If I book her into the local Marriott, can I put my name down as a guest? Then I show up and pay, and tell them "she'll be along later". That way, she would get the stay credit.

How would you work this?
Clarification question: Do you mean you make the reservation, but in her name, with her MR number? And have it billed to her credit card? Then you show up as the guest and check in, your wife stays at home?

(If my assumptions are correct, this probably will work, but I will stop short of saying a definitive yes, since I've never tried it. I *have* made reservations in MY name and OK'ed it to have my wife or daughter actually check in since I was flying in to meet them later and so the front desk really had no way of knowing if I actually showed up or not; nevertheless, I got my points/stay credits.)
