I used this technique on booking my next trip from CLE-HNL in April. Routing will be CLE-EWR-HNL outbound and HNL-LAX-IAH-CLE on the inbound. CO76 HNL-LAX is usually under five hours flight time so I never upgrade it. On the other inbound legs I usually get a plat. upgrade. The LAX-IAH flight at 700am is a 767.
I called the CO tech support people and asked them the price to book the EWR-HNL
leg in "K" class and the rest of the legs in "Q" or "V". Price difference was only $60.00. to have EWR-HNL CO15 changed to"K" class from "Q" class. CO15 is an 11 hour flight, so in my opinion it is well worth $60.00 plus 17,500 miles for a Business First seat.
They also gave me the 1,000 mile online bonus.
I never have thought that CO76 HNL-LAX was worth 17,500 miles. But i usually route my return trip thru LAX. Tough guys like me can handle five hours in coach on a 767 LOL.
Also, this routing gives ya a few extra onepass miles.
