I think as a general rule you always get the best value for reward currency for redemption in the same manner that it was earned. Use hotel points for hotel stays and airline points for award flights. Using them for an other purpose usually does not give great value. The exception is if you do not have enough for a normal award and will loose the points due to expiration.
