Not really. In a schedule change, you're allowed to change for no fee, if another flight better meets your requirements. As for the exit row, your wife is SE, so she's eligible to sit there.
NW did nothing but uphold the contract of carriage, and give your wife the seating perk to which she's entitled. This was completely by the book.
