I caught this story too about the flip-flops at the White House. It reminded me of my visit to the White House in 1998. I had a long layover at IAD on my way back from CDG. My baggage was checked through to BOS and so I was wearing only jeans, t-shirt, and leather jacket. I had a friend who was working with Vice President Gore at the time and so she invited to me to lunch and a brief tour of the White House. I've a great picture of me standing in Vice President Gore's office in the White House with my leather jacket and jeans. I actually felt pretty awkard about my dress, but I didn't want to pass up the opportunity. I didn't get into the actual Oval office though (just wandered around outside of it a bit), because President Clinton was in there meeting with someone.
I remember the old story about when Vice President Bush came straight into the Oval Office from a helicopter to meet with President Regan and apparently Bush was soaking wet and not wearing a jacket for some reason. The story goes that Regan asked Bush to leave, clean up, and come back wearing a jacket.
