I disagree with your FA friend. Not everyone is paying the low fares from LAX. And SQ cannot discriminate against people paying one fare from the next. Low fares ex-LAX are still higher than from some asian countries.. so what is SQ going to do? Determine what meal you are going to be served based on where you purchased your ticket?
A lot of SQ FAs really don't know what they are talking about. I know some myself..
