I have both Canadian & Czech citizenship

When I came to Canada in 1981, I assumed that I will never be able to go back to Prague, Czech Republic, where I was born.

Everything changed at the end of 1989 and I have renewed my Czech passport in 1995. Since Czechoslovakia split on January 1, 1993 into Czech Republic and Slovakia, the laws changed as well and it is now impossible to have Czech and another citizenship if the other was acquired after certain year (which I do not remember). I received my Canadian citizenship in 1985 and it is very precious to me. I still consider my CDN passport #1 and my CZ passport #2. It is purely a convenience.

Incidentally, I came back from CZ last night. When I arriove in PRG, I show my Czech passport. There are absolutely NO questions asked, and nothing is stamped. It was the same when I made two side trips to Germany during my stay. When I returned to Canada yesterday, I was grilled by the immigration officer as to why and where I travelled, had to show my ticket/itinerary and was specifically asked whether I purchased any tobacco. I find that a little bit too much of a control if you ask me personally.

Whether Canada should allow dual citizenship, I do not know. I will study the link posted above.
