Guided by the infinite wisdom of the US Congress, it seems Indonesian security has adopted the practice of screening for lighters to confiscate.
I was boarding a flight from Jakarta to Singapore, and after passing through the second x-ray of my bag, a gentleman seated at a card table in front of the gate waved me over and asked me if I smoked. I didnt know if he was trying to borrow a smoke from me, or what.
So when I said yes, he opened my carryon and asked for my lighter, which I gave him. Then he pawed around for 2 seconds and extracted a box of hotel matches I had in there (because flights from Singapore to the US allow matches). He confiscated the box while leaving in the other 2 boxes right next to it intact.
When I asked him what this was about (just for kicks), he mumbled something in Bahasa while the drool dribbled down his chin.
For those of you flying SQ to Singapore, rest assured I will not light my hair on fire without resorting to my secondary, approved, box of matches.
