Another good area to go hotel-hopping would be the Sunset strip. You can start at the Hyatt or The Standard. Sunset is definitely a happening place on New Year's Eve and an enjoyable place to hop from hotel-to-hotel-bars-to-hotel.
I cannot think of anywhere nicer to spend NYE than the SKYBAR at the Mondrian Hotel. You can see the sunset, relax under starry sky and watch the city twinkle into the New Year.
