Additionally, it is not guaranteed that he would have been bumped anyway or cost UA anything.
I am not arguing for milking anyone. I am just stating what the OP was fairly due for VDB'ing.
The OP mentioned that UA accepted his VDB and then denied him compensation after finding the better reroute.
Once UA accepts VDB, compensation is due. A more convenient reroute is not compensation (he was already traveling in F so he did not get an upgrade as compensation). Accepting or refusing EU regs cannot be left to the airline's choosing.
Yes the OP was happy to get home on a more convenient ITIN but he still did UA a favor as EU regulations would have still applied in IDB situation, regardless of new routing.
Regarding my thought process, I am only posting my opinion (not better than anyone's but not worse either, just mine) so that others may choose a different path if an airline employee ever denies their request for compensation after accepting the VDB offer.
