I will grade your essay an "A+". A very nice complete B/F analysis. When traveling I always carry a pair of comfortable industrial strength ear plugs, a comfortable eyeshade (on old DL one) and my own personal Sony NC-20 noise cancelling earphones whenever I travel on a bus (great for the Carey NYC-EWR trips), Amtrak, airlines etc.

Do note, noise cancelling headphones do not attentuate speech well, they are designed to reduce other frequencies.
