Discount hotel rates are not enough reason to join AAA. Usually, comparable rates are available with other common discounts: AARP, Entertainment, Costco, etc. However, being a member of AAA is worth it to me for other reasons. When I drove older cars, I used the towing service. But even with a car that doesn't break down often, I have used AAA when a rental car ran out of gas (faulty indicator), when a battery died, etc. And I always get the maps and tripbooks when I'm going to a new destination. (If I'm visiting friends at the destination and do not expect to return anytime soon, I leave the maps for them to use or share with other visitors. They seem to appreciate it.) And sometimes the hotel discounts are good.
