This is complete nonsense as handlers can and will put your carry-on in the hold if gate staff decide it is too large/heavy. Next time just tell them its a 10 dollar stroller and that you will thorw it out at the gate or give it to your friend who is seeing you off. I have heard that some airports (e.g. CDG) don't allow gate delivery of strollers.
