There are five Economy fare buckets on UA that allow E+ travel for non-Elites. Having the option of a movie (even if you don't like it) and 9 channels of audio entertainment (including Ch 9) is better than no IFE at all.
So, no, the OP's experience was nothing like being a non-Elite on UA.
