Last October I used the four Star Alliance upgrade vouchers to upgrade VIE-MEL-VIE - not upgrading the LHR to VIE segment. Worked a treat - or a W fare.
However for the return at MEL
at chechin I was told I had the option of either using the Star Vouchers, or the Senator e-vouchers. So 'I' seat availability isn't vital - you can try at the desk on the day. Be warned however, that if you don't get it - Y in Lauda is pretty cruddy. I'd stick with SQ for safety unless you're sure it'll work out.
Incidentally, they wanted both e-vouchers to upgrade to SIN, or just one Star Alliance voucher. Natch I took that option.
