Well you can get up at midnight on the day of travel, check in and print your boarding pass. But I have to get up at 4 AM for my ride to the 6:30 AM flight. Now at the gate even if you are in Group A you have a line. You can sit on the floor and wait but that is not very comfortable either. If you sit in a seat you have to run to the end of the A line or the gate agent will start boarding B.
At that point we are talking about middle seats and sitting next to colicky babies. Great way to start a week!

Actually, I fly WN a fair bit for the short hauls here in the Bay Area. I print my BP when I get up, and haven't yet failed to get group A. I've waited, sitting whereever I choose, while the A line boards...making my way slowly to the back of the A line just before it disappears...and I've never failed to get an aisle doing that, although it may not be at the front of the plane. No standing, no sitting on the floor, no running, Of course, the logistics of the 6:30 flight may not work as easily as I'm suggesting (if you check in online at 4 when you get up...can you still get A).
It's clear you've done this enough to know, and your experiences are different from mine, to be sure

.
Cheers.
