In my experiences of MR's, going to smaller airports on international tickets can be problematical. As mentioned above, the larger airports seem to have seen it all. My worst experience was on a Sydney to Christchrch run. There was no transfer lounge so I had to clear customs and recheck for the plane leaving just over an hour later. They gave my bag and me a thorough search before releasing me.
I think it helped that I had my flight log book with me (they found that very interesting) and of course no luggage to speak of. I think they were more put out that I wasn't staying than anything.
