Make sure you do this from the refunds page.
I made the mistake of thinking I could cancel the reservation to get to refunds and it and actually cancelled it. I was able to call AA immediately and they re-instated the reservation. I had upgraded a flight to HNL and when cancelled they gave the the "A" availability to the next person on the list as A was 0. The telephone agent had to speak to AA awards to get it fixed but it all worked out.
Glad I didn't have to explain cancelling our tickets to my husband.
