The 742 had more range than the 741, IIRC it could do LAX and SFO from LHR whereas the 741 was limited to the East Coast. Neither could do LHR-HKG.
In fact, the 742 could make LHR-India, but it was deemed more operationally sensible to break the Far East flights in the Gulf than on the Subcontinent (probably due to cheap fuel.)
