If you're flying out of IAD and your flight leaves during rush hour, you'd better have gotten there before rush hour started if you want to make your flight.

And my wife car pools into DC every day - and I-66 is the fastest way to go from DC to IAD or vice-versa.

If the choice is drive to IAD and pay less to fly a non-stop to DEN, or go to DCA and fly via ORD, I personally woud probably go for IAD even if I were right next to DCA. For one thing, there are more options to/from IAD, so irregular ops would probably be easier to handle from IAD than from DCA.
