Reason i ask is this, I have a Y Fare for a flight in 60 hours, there are still seats in first, but i haven't been upgraded... am i missing something?
Y-UP fares book into A class. You can check availability of A class using this link:
http://www.flyaow.com/classcwt.htm. If there is A class available on your flight, and you are on a full Y fare, you can call AA and change the reservation to the YUP fare. There may be a few $$ difference in the fare but it shouldn't be much. None of this will happen automatically, the only way to get a YUP is to book one specifically.
If you stay on the upgrade list, your odds as a Plat are probably worse, because EXPs will be ahead of you. That said, if it gets to be day of travel and you're on the airport list, the full fare will help you move up the list (I have seen Plats on full fare get upgraded before EXPs on discount fares, even though this is theoretically not supposed to happen).
